In late 2004, following a national search by East Baltimore Development, Inc. (EBDI) (www.ebdi.org), a Forest City-led partnership was chosen to implement its vision for the new Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins.
Since then, the Forest City-New East Baltimore Partnership has worked closely with EBDI, the City of Baltimore, and community leaders on zoning, planning, design and other issues related to the 31-acre first phase of the project. In addition, the partnership is committed to ensuring participation in the project by minority-, women- and locally-owned businesses.
The Forest City-New East Baltimore Partnership envisions an approach that firmly re-establishes a sense of community in East Baltimore and delivers a bold new image for this district. It will be a place of lively streets and parks, varied and diverse residential opportunities, and new high-growth jobs. No longer an isolated backdrop to the medical complex, the New East Baltimore Community will instead become a place of common ground, proud of its history and ready for the next generation of uses.
The economic benefits of the new biomedical facilities will carry forward to the community through new and affordable housing, jobs, and neighborhood-serving retail. In like manner, Johns Hopkins staff, faculty, and visitors will find an attractive, beautifully landscaped, and vibrant new neighborhood in which to enjoy a lunch break, find a convenient new home, or carry out groundbreaking research. In short, our approach for the New East Baltimore Community is one that will deliver engaging architectural and public space design, technologically forward life sciences facilities, and the modern amenities of a revitalized residential neighborhood.
